Honouring the Class of 2020

This year marked the 16th Graduation Ceremony for the graduates of 2019-2020 Academic year. To honour and celebrate successful graduation of Class 2020, Westminster International University in Tashkent hosted a Virtual Celebration Ceremony! This Pre-Graduation Ceremony that took place on Friday, November 13, was a significant milestone and a cherished occasion for graduates to celebrate with each other, their family, friends, and entire WIUT Community. The traditional in-person graduation ceremony is expected to take place in spring of 2021.

This year more than 600 undergraduate and around 100 postgraduate students joined the WIUT Alumni Community. This year’s graduates became the proud ambassadors of the University with undergraduate degree in Business Management, Economics, Commercial Law, Business Information Systems, and Finance. At postgraduate level, graduates received their degree in Applied Economics, International Business Management, International Commercial Law, and Teaching and Learning.

The list of invited guests included Sodyk Safayev, first deputy chairperson Senate of Uzbekistan’s Parliament, Komiljon Karimov, Rector of the University of World Economy and Diplomacy, Vladimir Kravchenko, CEO of Ucell, Steven Anderson, Deputy Head of Mission, British Embassy in Tashkent and others.

Bakhrom Mirkasimov, Rector of WIUT and Peter Bonfield, Vice- Chancellor of the University of Westminster (London) delivered farewell speeches and congratulated graduates with successful completion of their studies. In his speech, Bakhrom Mirkasimov says: “Graduates, each one of you is here today through your own sustained hard work. You have needed courage to face the challenges of university learning. You have needed to develop certain qualities of character and mind to achieve this. With these qualities you are empowered to seek out new opportunities with the confidence that you can contribute, with the knowledge that you are ready, that you can overcome challenges and unexpected setbacks.” The online ceremony also featured speeches from Deputy Rectors, Deans of Schools, Academic Staff and graduates.

More than 4200 graduates have been awarded degrees at WIUT since its establishment in 2002. Although the system of higher education witnessed disruption in traditional mode of teaching and learning in the year 2020, there a significant achievements that can be highlighted. WIUT, among the first Universities in Uzbekistan demonstrated the smooth transition to an online mode of study, with Learning platform developed by the University. WIUT became the first university in Uzbekistan to offer PhD and DSc degrees of international level, the first intake being in 2020-2021 Academic year. Despite the cancellation of in-person research seminars, WIUT continued its collaboration with University of London and IFPRI to organize series of virtual seminars with world-renowned economists and experts, like Jeffrey Sachs, Sergei Guriev, and others. This year marked the expansion of the scale of University campuses, with the construction of a new building in Amir Temur street.  Moreover, WIUT became the member of International Association of Universities, auspices of UNESCO.
