Sustainable Urban Water Management

by Jonah Schein

Abstract

The number of people with access to clean drinking water is declining all over the world due to high population growth and diminishing freshwater sources. One of the solutions to sustainable freshwater supply is establishing closed-cycle water purification systems. The presentation demonstrates the state-of-the-art methods and techniques of waste water treatment in the examples of:

- Anaerobic bioreactors used in New York City

- Net positive energy use wastewater treatment in the Bay Area

- Use of Anammox bacteria in Washington, DC to reduce cost and maximize efficiency
