PURPOSE: To undertake the responsibility for the development of the University’s Public Relations and External Communications Strategy; to manage public relations, media relations and promote the news of the University to external audiences.
CONTEXT: The University is a high profile institution and requires close and careful management in external arenas. The university will attract attention and will need to promote its interests in a range of areas and with a number of external agencies. There is a need for a high level corporate management of the relationship with such agencies. The influence of the media is growing and will be an important source of promotion and distraction for the University. The post is an important contribution to the management of the external affairs of the University one of whose functions is to represent, promote and manage the external face of the University. In addition, the post also covers internal communications, an area that can influence and be influenced by external events.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- To help develop and implement the Marketing Strategy of the University, in particular the Public Relations and External Communications strategy;
- To be responsible for public relations, communications with external agencies and especially media, and to coordinate public relations activities;
- To promote the university’s social contribution and corporate profile via appropriate external communications;
- To manage and assist with the web site, ensuring that it is marketing focused and reflects the promotional and recruitment requirements of the university;
- To support the University’s social media strategy and profile in social media;
- To coordinate and develop appropriate information for publication in a range of media, provide media members with press releases, articles for publication and other information that promotes the University’s corporate profile;
- To ensure that the University is represented in an appropriate manner to media;
- To manage media relations, ensuring that the best interests of the University are represented;
- To support the development of the University’s literature for publication as articles, news, stories and related information;
- To contribute to the general activities of the Marketing team;
- To carry out other duties as required in consultation with the Head of Marketing and Communications.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
The person appointed to this post should be able to demonstrate the following essential elements:
QUALIFICATIONS
- Have a first degree, preferably in the areas of communications, public relations, journalism;
- Be fluent in English to a high standard, fluency is important both oral and written;
- Be competent in Uzbek and Russian, with excellent oral and written skills in both languages.
EXPERIENCE
- Experience of managing external and/or media relations;
- Evidence of communication training and media training.
APTITUDES, ABILITIES, SKILLS AND PERSONAL QUALITIES
- Innovative, with practical skills in publications;
- An ability to think strategically and creatively, able to adopt ideas and to produce practical results;
- A well-developed ability to manage difficult situations, with diplomatic skill and strong sense of the key issues;
- Able to quickly assess and react to complex events, to summarise and communicate difficult/complex messages;
- Good ICT skills;
- Excellent organizational and diplomatic skills;
- A strong sense of corporate commitment to the mission and objectives of the University.
