GREENER CAMPUS. SUSTAINABLE UNIVERSITY

Welcome to WIUT's Sustainable Campus Initiative

At Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT), sustainability is at the heart of our campus culture. We are committed to fostering an environmentally friendly space through various green initiatives, from tree-planting campaigns to innovative sustainability programmes.

WIUT’s Green Campus Initiatives

WIUT has implemented several initiatives to ensure a more sustainable and eco-friendly campus, including:

• Tree-planting initiatives: In line with the "Yashil Makon" national project, WIUT has planted trees to improve air quality and biodiversity.

• Water Stations: Installed across campus, these provide fresh drinking water and encourage the use of refillable bottles, reducing plastic waste.

• Eco-friendly infrastructure: Our campus buildings are designed with energy-efficient lighting and optimised heating/cooling systems to reduce energy consumption.

• Waste management programmes: We promote recycling and responsible waste disposal through designated recycling bins and awareness campaigns.

• Sustainable transport solutions: Encouraging students and staff to use bicycles, walk, or carpool to reduce carbon footprints.

• Green Club and student-led initiatives: Our Eco Club actively organizes sustainability workshops, clean-up campaigns, and awareness drives to engage the WIUT community.

• Collaboration with Chapter Zero Uzbekistan: WIUT partners with Chapter Zero Uzbekistan, an initiative that brings together business leaders, policymakers, and academics to promote climate action and sustainability governance. Through this collaboration, we contribute to raising awareness and implementing climate-conscious strategies within our institution.

• Energy conservation practices: WIUT has adopted strategies to reduce energy consumption, such as using motion-sensor lighting in hallways, promoting the use of energy-efficient appliances, and integrating renewable energy solutions where feasible.

• Green spaces and biodiversity: Beyond tree planting, WIUT is working to develop more green areas on campus, including student gardens, pollinator-friendly plants, and shaded seating areas to promote well-being and biodiversity.

Contributing to a Greener Future

Sports Activities

In support of the "Yashil Makon" national project, Westminster International University in Tashkent has planted new trees on campus, contributing to a greener and more sustainable environment for our community.

This initiative not only enhances the natural beauty of our campus but also reflects WIUT's commitment to Uzbekistan's national goals for environmental sustainability. We are proud to play our part in creating a greener future for generations to come.

WIUT Joins the Green Marathon for a Sustainable Tomorrow

WIUT proudly joined the nationwide “Green Future” marathon, organized as part of the “Yashil Makon” initiative. The tree-planting campaign on our campus saw active participation from WIUT Rector Komiljon Karimov, Professor Peter Bonfield, students, and members of WIUT’s Eco Club. This initiative aligns with President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's proposal to declare 2025 as the “Year of Environmental Protection and the Green Economy,” contributing to Uzbekistan’s efforts to enhance environmental sustainability. It also reflects WIUT’s dedication to creating a greener, more sustainable future.

Celebrating the Successful Completion of the SDG Course at WIUT!

Sports Activities

Launched in October last year and led by our Rector, Dr. Komiljon Karimov, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Course has been a transformative learning experience dedicated to sustainability and global development. Students engaged in thought-provoking discussions, interactive debates, and impactful projects, deepening their understanding of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and their real-world applications.

The course featured sessions with distinguished guests, including Dr. Ceren Güven Güres, Country Programme Manager of UN Women Uzbekistan; Professor Peter Bonfield, President of the University of Westminster; Sabine Machl, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Uzbekistan; Kanokpan Lao-Araya, Country Director of the Asian Development Bank; and Nigina Abbaszadeh, Head of UNFPA in Uzbekistan.

The closing ceremony celebrated the dedication, creativity, and commitment of our students, faculty, and guests. Highlights included the announcement of winning teams, reflections on key insights gained, and tokens of appreciation presented to the Rector and Deputy Rector for their invaluable support. Notably, the winning team will participate in the International Student Conference at the University of Westminster in London.

While the course has concluded, our mission of sustainability continues. We extend our gratitude to all participants, speakers, and organizers who contributed to this initiative's success.

Eco Club

WIUT Ecology Club took part in the conference «Implementation of Environmental Initiatives in Universities: Successful Experience and Development» organised by the international foundation for the development of science and education Ziyo Forum.

The insightful event brought together educators, administrators, sustainability experts, and students to share experiences, discuss challenges, and explore new opportunities for advancing green practices in higher education institutions.

The leader of the club, Nigina Kushaeva presented about how WIUT Ecology Club plays an important role in promoting sustainability on university campus.

Chapter Zero Uzbekistan

Sports Activities

Chapter Zero Uzbekistan is the first strategic chapter established in Central Asia under the umbrella of the Climate Governance Initiative (CGI), in partnership with the World Economic Forum (WEF), and supported by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Deloitte Uzbekistan.

We are delighted to announce that WIUT will host Chapter Zero Uzbekistan, an initiative dedicated to promoting effective climate-related governance among corporate boards. This makes Chapter Zero Uzbekistan the 26th chapter in the global network.

Staying Hydrated While Saving the Planet

Staying hydrated is essential not only for our health but also for our environment. At WIUT, our new Water Stations across campus provide convenient access to clean, fresh water, encouraging the use of refillable bottles and reducing single-use plastic waste. Every refill counts—join us in making our campus greener!

As 2025 has been declared the Year of Environmental Protection and the Green Economy, now is the perfect time to embrace eco-friendly habits and build a sustainable future.

Join Us in Our Sustainability Journey

We invite all students, faculty, and community members to participate in our sustainability initiatives. Together, we can make a significant impact and contribute to a greener, more sustainable future.

Let's work together to make our campus and our world a better place for future generations.
