JOB TITLE: Associate Dean, Research and Partnership

REPORTS TO: Dean of School of Business and Economics
PURPOSE: As a key leader in the Faculty, the Associate Dean on Research and Partnership (ADRP) provides strategic research leadership to support development of capacity and excellence in the achievement of the Faculty’s research goals and objectives and play a crucial role in delivering the University's strategic objectives for education and research through the development and oversight of collaborative partnerships.
CONTEXT: This post reports to the School of Business and Economics and was introduced following the Faculty restructuring early in 2020.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Research Leadership – provide strategic leadership and support for research and research training programs within the Faculty, including strategic planning, and research program development and evaluation;
- Research Operations – lead and coordinate operations function of the faculty strategic research plan;
- Faculty Development - collaborates with Deans and Center Directors to support faculty research development and promote research excellence;
- Faculty Representation – represent and, include when appropriate, Faculty at University level and externally on research-related initiatives. This includes liaising with partners in the public, private sectors and civil society advising the Dean on university and external research initiatives;
- Involve the Center for Policy Research and Outreach in external public policy research especially partnerships and resource development opportunities;
- Lead, along with School Deans, the development and implementation of the Faculty and School Research Strategic Plans;
- Ensure appropriate strategies and polices are in place to enable the Faculty to recruit and retain excellent researchers;
- Develop an active research culture that fosters the highest achievements, encourages originality and innovation and enriches the student learning experience;
- In collaboration with the Research and Innovation Office, capture information about all research undertaken by the Faculty and identify funding and knowledge transfer opportunities;
- Promote research links and engagement within the Faculty, across the University and with external organizations;
- In collaboration with the Deputy Rector on Research and Innovation evolve strategies to significantly grow the Faculty research income;
- Implement University-wide strategies and policies for research and to maximise the impact of research performed within the Faculty;
- Identify new research opportunities that have potential for significant growth and to liaise with departments on associated grant and contract submissions;
- Prepare the Faculty case for University investment in additional capital resources required to grow and develop research capacity;
- Leverage internal peer review mechanisms, to strengthen the quality of the Faculty research base and to nurture environments that promote research at the interface of different disciplines;
- Encourage academics to engage in multi-disciplinary research within the Faculty and, more broadly, across the University and externally with other organizations;
- Disseminate and implement good research practice across the Faculty;
- Increase external collaborative research and knowledge transfer activity regionally, nationally and internationally;
- Work with the Dean and the Heads of Departments to ensure the strongest possible submissions to the Research Excellence Framework;
- Formulate Faculty responses to internal and external consultation papers relating to research;
Planning
- Lead, in liaison with the Heads of Department, in the development of the portfolio of activities across the Faculty;
- Assist the Dean and the Heads of Departments in developing research action plans that align with the University Research Strategy and work with the Faculty Leaders to deliver these plans;
- Ensure research activities of the Faculty are undertaken in accordance with the governance, policy and regulatory frameworks of the University;
- Chair the Faculty Research Committee and serve on or chair other Committees, Working Parties and Groups of the Faculty as required;
- Represent the Faculty on Committees, Working Parties and Groups of the University as required;
- Contribute to the management and operations of the Faculty and University by undertaking specific responsibilities as agreed with the Dean;
- Work collaboratively with other Associate Deans and Heads of Department to establish and maintain national and international recognition of the University as a center of excellence in research and knowledge transfer;
- To perform other responsibilities as requested by the Dean of School.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
QUALIFICATIONS
The candidate shall hold the rank of associate professor or professor, preferably with an earned research doctorate, or in progress toward a doctoral degree, preferably from an international university. The ADR must have a proven track record as a researcher and scholar as evidenced by grant capture, research dissemination and graduate student supervision; broad experience in the University, and understanding of the current context and environment of research funding and external partner communities. He/she must also have experience leading and managing effectively projects/programs, or other significant management responsibilities at the departmental or Faculty level.
EXPERIENCE
- Strong record of research productivity;
- Effective management and leadership experience in an HE environment;
- Experience working with diverse populations;
- Participation in collaborative research initiatives;
- A record of senior authorship in peer-reviewed publications;
- Experience in mentoring junior faculty, researchers and students;
- Understanding of and support for appropriate technology integration in an academic setting;
- Evidence of managing for results to increase quality, productivity, and efficiency at a higher education institution;
- Support for professional development programmes and delivery for Academic Staff;
- Good interpersonal skills and experience of communicating effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders;
- Understanding the issues involved in successfully integrating high-quality teaching, research, and service activities within an academic setting;
- Experience working effectively with external agencies, as appropriate to the role;
- Evidence of policy formulation and execution in the academic context;

- Excellent supervisory and research skills;

- Open to and engages with contemporary developments in Higher Education with a passion to stretch the boundaries of teaching and research quality;
- The ability to chair formal and informal meetings;
- Candidates should be fluent in English either with 7.5 IELTS or a subject qualification taught and assessed in English as per the policy on Academic staff.
