DEN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CONFERENCE: IDEAS WITHOUT BORDERS

The DEN International Student Conference is an annual international platform of the Democratic Education Network at the University of Westminster, bringing together students, academics, and partner institutions for dialogue, research exchange, and collaborative learning. As part of the UNESCO Chair-related activities at WIUT, the conference has become a valuable extension of the Our Sustainable Future Together course, connecting student learning in Tashkent with international academic engagement in London.

Each year, the highest-performing student team from the SDG course is awarded a fully funded academic trip to London, supported by the university. This opportunity enables students to present their ideas at an international conference, engage with peers from different countries, and experience how research, education, and sustainable development intersect in practice.

A distinctive feature of the DEN Conference is its connection to student publication. Every year, DEN produces an annual edited book that brings together student papers, reflections, and research contributions presented through the conference. This gives students a rare opportunity to move beyond classroom assignments and become published contributors in an international academic platform. Through this process, students learn how ideas are developed, reviewed, refined, and shared with wider audiences.

The conference programme is closely connected to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with annual themes focusing on selected global challenges such as inclusive education, sustainability, artificial intelligence, youth engagement, peace, justice, and social transformation. Through presentations, panel discussions, question-and-answer sessions, and publication opportunities, participants are encouraged to turn academic work into meaningful public contribution.

Beyond the formal sessions, the DEN Conference offers students a wider experience of international networking, cultural exchange, and personal growth. It allows WIUT students not only to represent their university and country on a global stage, but also to explore London, build friendships across borders, and gain confidence as young researchers and future leaders.
