COURSE OVERVIEW
The Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods for Social Sciences is a 60-credit postgraduate programme designed for individuals and industry professionals who wish to develop strong research skills and analytical capabilities in social sciences. The course will help to build research skills and improve research competencies in the social sciences. This includes fundamentals of social science research designs including a review of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods; understanding the whole “research cycle” starting from the research idea generation, design of methodology and instrument, analysis, and publishing results; main approaches and software used for quantitative and qualitative data analysis; the review of types of research outputs, the panorama of academic journals and publication cycle. Given the versatility of the social sciences, students will have excellent opportunities to learn to conduct real-world research projects, including in their professional areas and in interdisciplinary settings.
Through a combination of different teaching methods, students will learn how to formulate research questions, design research methodologies, analyse quantitative and qualitative data, and present findings in an academic and professional format. Graduates of this programme gain valuable competencies applicable across a wide range of fields, including public policy, business, education, development studies, and social research.

COURSE STRUCTURE

Since the Postgraduate Certificate includes modules from the MSc programme, students who continue their studies will complete the remaining modules required for the full 180-credit MSc degree.

Applicants should normally hold an undergraduate degree (or equivalent) from a recognised higher education institution with a minimum of a second lower class honours (2:2 or equivalent) in any subject area. Applicants without a formal higher education qualification or a formal qualification that is not at an equivalent academic standard, may be considered if the following conditions apply:
They are or have been in employment where their role is in the area of the course and involves a high level of analysis and critical thinking. -
Applicants must have:
- Had their first or second degree (or equivalent) taught and assessed in English; or
- IELTS with an overall score of at least 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in writing or another English Language Test recognised by the University of Westminster; or
- The required pass level on the Preparatory Language Course for PG studies: Preparatory Language Course for Master's degree
We accept the TOEFL (IBT (In person test) for entry to our programmes. We also accept TOEFL ‘My Best Scores’ where it relates to TOEFL iBT test results.
- TOEFL score should be 88 overall with a minimum of 21 in Writing
Please note that the TOEFL Home Edition (Online test) is not accepted for entry to WIUT degree programmes.
RESEARCH METHODS CLINIC
Research Methods Clinic The Research Methods Clinic (RMC) at Westminster International University in Tashkent is a free research hub designed for students and faculty interested in developing their research skills. Organised within the MSc Research Methods for Social Sciences programme and moderated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nargiza Alimukhamedova, the clinic provides a collaborative space to explore research methodologies and discuss practical research challenges.
Sessions take place every Friday at WIUT Campus and cover key topics in social science research, including monitoring, evaluation, and impact assessment.
Participation is free, but registration is required.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nargiza Alimukhamedova, Ph.D., DSc
Nargiza received her Ph.D. in Economics from CERGE-EI, Charles University in Prague, in 2014. She is currently Associate Professor at the Westminster International University in Tashkent. Her main research areas include microfinance, applied econometrics, program evaluation, development economics, and environmental economics. Nargiza specializes in the impact evaluation of development programs and the design of new methods.
Nargiza was ranked in the top 10% of researchers in Economics by RePEc, in 2021. She was awarded “The Woman of the Year 2023” (“Yil Ayoli”) award in the Tashkent city round of the national competition in the nomination “The best idea of the year”.
